Heritage

The hotel that moved.

The original Waldorf-Astoria, built in two stages in the 1890s, was demolished in 1929 to make way for the Empire State Building. The Waldorf Astoria on Park Avenue was completed in 1931 and was the world's tallest hotel until 1957. So a key from the Park Avenue hotel is from the second Waldorf, not the first.

What to look for

Before you buy a Waldorf Astoria key.

  • A collector in a public Reddit thread said one Waldorf key looked cast rather than hand engraved, and worth far less than the early hand-engraved ones. A different Astoria key in that thread sold for $175 against a $400 ask (Reddit r/whatsthisworth).
  • Asks and sold prices can be far apart. Treat every price as an opening position.
  • Key plus fob with matching room numbers is the combination to look for.
  • Compare several listings before you decide; the same hotel can be priced very differently.
